Dear Phil,

It has been an honor and pleasure to work with you as one of the editors of the Oxford book on Psychology and Terrorism. I am glad that our professional paths crossed and that I had the fortunate opportunity to get to know you on a more personal level. I wish you the best in the coming years.

Well, Phil, this is quite a big surprise that they've planned for you. An electronic Festschrift of sorts, and a measure of how many lives you have affected enough for people to take time out and write to you. And you have affected quite a few, as you can probably see from the size of this website. Who else in our field would be known to an average person walking across a casino in Las Vegas? Or do you not remember that? Best wishes on what I am sure will be your unretirement.

Dear Phil -- from talking to the public, cheerleading for science, advancing the field, and inspiring colleagues, you are a great role model!

I wish you all the very best in what comes next -- and hope that "behavior matters" and "psychology matters" do you proud.

Phil,

Warmest congratulations on a sterling career in psychology. You continue to be an inspiration to those of us who want to "give psychology back to the people." An old Irish toast says, "May the best day of your past be the worst day of your future." That is my wish for you -- that as you enter this next phase of your life, you will find even more joy and reasons to celebrate every day.

Salut!

Phil is a great guy and has done an enormous amount for the field--through stimulating research and prolific advocacy. He's also a great softball player, and as much as I respect him as a psychologist, I'll always have trouble forgiving him for almost single-handedly defeating the Berkeley softball team back in 1980. Oh, well...

With great and best wishes from a fond colleague.

It is hard for me to imagine the field of social psychology, or the field of psychology for that matter, without your presence. But then I am reminded as I begin to prepare the lecture for my Introduction to Psychology class, review films that I might show the class, turn on PBS to relax before turning in, or survey the literature on social influence in preparation for writing that your contributions have been so broad and so deep you will remain a ubiquitous presence in the field long after I retire. Very best wishes.

Dear Professor Zimbardo,

Best wishes for your new life! I hope that together with retirement will also come more free time. And, in fact, if I may, I would already like to reserve some of that time and invite you to visit the Stanford Program in Florence and give a talk to our students the next time you are in Italy.

Tanti auguri da Firenze,

Phil,

Our brief contacts in APA were always a pleasure for me. I've long admired you for your creativity, enthusiasm, and erudition....it was nice to learn that you are also a very kind person. (You once gave me a lift at the Convention when I was struggling to walk the distance back to the hotel. Bless you for that!) I wish you the richness of new opportunities in your retirement.

We have many memories from our long friendhip with Phil: having dinner in San Francisco with Chris, Al, and Carlo, and breakfast in Washington, D.C. with Arafat's bodyguard; playing and singing in Naples and laying on the beach of Porto Santo Stefano; writing papers while celebrating Rome winning the cup. Usually talking psychology, politics, and love.

He is really smart and generous -- that is why we like Phil so much.

GV, Laura, Lorenzo, Paolo, Claudio, Tina, and many others.

A presto, GV.
