 Family and its importance

When we think of family, tons of memories come to our minds, but we usually don't realize how sensible family connections are. When I first got to the United States, everything seemed new, exciting and different. I walked around the university campus andmarveled at how huge it was. It was scary to come all by myself, of course, but exciting at the same time. I wasn't going to have my mom with me to help me when I was lost or in trouble. I was suddenly becoming a completely independent person which seemed, at first, very overwhelming. I come from a very different country, Peru, where people of my age and social class don't have to worry about anything but focusing on their studies and having fun. I transferred from a little private school from home where you just go to study and then go back to your house to have lunch and dinner with your family. Coming here is definitely a great opportunity for me to grow as a person and have a different college experience. However, there is an opportunity cost. In this case, my family. We usually don't value our family when they are close and we don't realize how important they are. We usually put “fun” things first: friends, parties, and all different kinds of things. Families are our most intimate social environments and we have to learn to give it its proper importance. The key is to have healthy family relationships, to value our family and try to work on improving our family bonds.
