 Outlier Detection/Removal
Posted by jimbop

Hello! I am currently conducting an analysis of my data and could use a few questions answered about outlier detection and removal. My adviser said to remove all outliers outside of 2.5 SDs from the mean of their condition (as opposed to the grand mean). Now, I've read that, for a dataset of more than 100, you should eliminate all outliers outside of 3 SDs from the grand mean, not from the mean of each individuals' condition. Is the method that my adviser wants me to use acceptable, or is he being a little "sketchy" (or both)? Thank you!
