Ian - you're definitely not too old!! (What do you mean by the "OU route"?)
For the record, I didn't even start college until age 37; graduated at 40, took a 2 year RA job, and was recently accepted to an Ivy league PhD psychology/ neuroscience program. Will the job market be kind to me once I finish? I have no idea... I'm pretty happy to just have been accepted with full funding. This is only really possible for me because I don't have kids and my wife makes a decent living. (In other words, I don't think I could support a family/kids on a grad school fellowship).

I'm going after this because I love the work; hopefully I'll be able to scratch out a decent living from it at some point.

Everyone's situation is different; financial situation aside, I don't see why you shouldn't pursue it.
