 NSF Funding Opportunities: BIGDATA

Dear Colleagues,

We wanted to bring to your attention the BIGDATA Program Solicitation from NSF, which is relevant for addressing data challenges within the Social, Behavioral, and Economic (SBE) sciences: NSF 15-544, "Critical Techniques and Technologies for Advancing Foundations and Applications of Big Data Science & Engineering" (BIGDATA):

http://www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?WT.z_pims_id=504767&ods_key=nsf15544

The BIGDATA program at the National Science Foundation (NSF) seeks novel approaches to realize the transformative potential of big data. A vast array of data types may be relevant, including: social interactional data from social networking sites, twitter feeds and click streams; administrative data; or scientific data from large-scale surveys, brain research, large-scale simulations, continuous simulation models, and computational analyses of observational data.

BIGDATA proposals can be broadly foundational and not tied to specific domains ("Foundations" proposals); however, the proposals of most relevance to social psychologists are "Innovative Applications" (IA) proposals. These develop techniques, methodologies and technologies of key importance to a Big Data problem directly impacting at least one domain science, such as social and behavioral sciences, or geosciences, education, biology, the physical sciences, and engineering.

Social psychologists or others in the SBE sciences who are interested in submitting a BIGDATA Innovative Application (IA) may contact SBE Program Officer Dr. Heng Xu (hxu@nsf.gov) for questions. The IA BIGDATA mechanism for SBE sciences seeks to fund cutting edge research projects that develop innovative methods for addressing big data challenges within SBE sciences, and that provide solutions with potential for a broader impact on data science and SBE sciences. Such proposals may focus on novel theoretical analysis and/or on experimental evaluation of techniques and methodologies within SBE sciences.

Full Proposal Deadline(s) (due by 5 p.m. proposer's local time): May 20, 2015

Sincerely,

Kerry L. Marsh, Ph.D. kmarsh@nsf.gov; 703-292-7281
