Postdoctoral Research Fellow: Multi-Site Consortium on Gender Bias in STEM
A new Canada-wide research consortium known as Engendering Success in STEM (ESS) is currently seeking applicants for a Postdoctoral Fellow. The successful applicant would work at one of the key research centres for the consortium (the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, University of Toronto, or the University of Waterloo) and would work directly with one or more members of the ESS Consortium Team: Toni Schmader (ESS Director), Andrew Baron, Hilary Bergsieker, Sonia Kang, Elizabeth Page-Gould, Steven Spencer, or Stephen Wright.
Research in the consortium is aimed broadly at understanding and intervening to change implicit gender bias and/or its consequences for girls and women in science, technology, engineering, and math. Projects can include research focused on young children, adolescents, university students, and/or working professionals. Depending on the interests and experience of the fellow, applicants can gain expertise in multiple methods (implicit measures, developmental approaches, field-based event sampling studies, intervention research) and will work in a team-based environment to design and carry out projects that integrate research at the intersection of implicit bias, social identity threat, and intergroup contact theory. The position is expected to begin during the summer of 2017. Review of applications will begin May 15th, 2017, and will continue until the position is filled. The position is full-time for a minimum of one year, with the possibility of renewal. Applicants may be Canadian citizens or non-citizens. Responsibilities include taking a leadership role in designing and executing research projects, including statistical analysis and writing up the results of research for publication in peer-reviewed journals. The ideal candidate will have a strong record of research productivity related to implicit social cognition; stigma and stereotyping; gender; or intergroup relations. Scholars in social, organizational, and/or developmental psychology are encouraged to apply. Expertise in longitudinal research and/or intervention designs is a plus, as is experience using R in multi-level modeling.
Candidates are expected to hold a Ph.D. in Psychology or a related discipline (or expect to have successfully defended their dissertation no later than July 31, 2017). The cover letter should specifically identify which ESS researcher(s) is the preferred postdoctoral supervisor and why. The base salary for this position is $45,000 (CAD/year plus benefits for the candidate and any eligible dependents). Salary and benefits are commensurate with standards set by the University of British Columbia. The successful candidate will also receive a travel allowance of $1,500 Cdn/year to attend conferences or scholarly meetings and will have the opportunity to receive training with more than member of the ESS team, if desired.
