The full-time research assistant will provide a high level of assistance to the Director and Associate Directors of the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity (www.yaleruddcenter.org). Duties include literature reviews, data collection and analysis, the preparation of manuscripts and verbal presentations, and involvement in research design.

Representative Duties:

• Researches and collects data through complex laboratory experiments on how children develop food preferences, children’s reactions to advertised food
• Conducts library research on the topic of food policy, childhood obesity, and the impact of the school environment on children’s eating behavior and weight
• Conducts structured interviews with parents, teachers, and children on topics related to children’s eating, television watching
• Records and compiles information related to research data. Codes data accordingly to research specifications.
• Uses a computer terminal to input and retrieve data and to generate reports
• Processes and summarizes data using SPSS and similar statistical programs
• Assists in data interpretation and analyses
• Reports on status of research activities
• Sets up, operates and maintains laboratory equipment, which may include snack foods and videotapes of commercials
• Recruits study participants from schools and other public settings
• Orders and maintains inventory of supplies
• May assist in designing, developing, and modifying research experiments, procedures, or survey instruments
• May oversee and instruct other research staff

Required Knowledge/Experience:

• Interest in the fields of obesity, eating behavior, and public policy
• Limited experience conducting research experiments in the field of psychology
• College degree in psychology

Required Skills:

• Extracts and compiles a range of data from written sources, from individuals by asking questions, or from one or several given databases, limited interpretation of data
• Use of one or several standard reference works, such as PsycINFO and Medline
• Screens complex, technical or specialized literature for referral
• Composes and proofreads routine formal letters or memoranda for internal or external circulation
• Regular, skilled use of more complex machines, including word processors or personal computers
