POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH TRAINING IN MEDICAL BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE

The Department of Behavioral Science is seeking individuals interested in postdoctoral research training in medical behavioral science. Individuals with a background in any behavioral or social science discipline (e.g., sociology, anthropology, nursing, psychology, communications, public health, etc.) are encouraged to apply. Initial appointment is for one year with possibility of reappointment for 1 or 2 additional years. The position is available beginning sometime after July 1, 2004.
The Department of Behavioral Science has a long history of providing quality multidisciplinary research training. The postdoctoral research training program is supported by an NIMH training grant, now in its 24th consecutive year of funding. Annual stipends begin at $35,200 and are based on experience. Health insurance is also provided. Additional funds are available to support trainee travel and research-related expenses. Excellent office space and computing resources are provided. The University of Kentucky is located in Lexington, a pleasant community of about 330,000 residents with a modest cost of living and a high quality of life.
The NIMH postdoctoral research training program is flexible and designed to accommodate the specific research interests and professional goals of trainees. Research trainees select a mentor or mentors from departmental faculty. Faculty in the department represent a range of social and behavioral science disciplines, methodological perspectives, and substantive interests. Research trainees are expected to participate in ongoing research conducted by one or more members of the departmental faculty. In addition, research trainees are expected to develop their own independent research projects under the supervision of departmental faculty. Departmental faculty are involved in nationally prominent research in a variety of areas representing the application of the behavioral and social sciences to understanding health and disease. Some of these areas include cancer, stroke, rural health, substance abuse, medical education, aging, behavioral pharmacology, cardiovascular disease, quality of life, coping, and women’s health.

Completion of a doctoral degree in a behavioral or social science discipline (e.g., sociology, anthropology, nursing, psychology, public health, communications, etc.) is required for appointment. Prior research experience in a medical setting is not required. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Women and minority applicants are encouraged to apply.
