The Department of Psychology at the University of Houston anticipates filling a tenure track position at the Associate of Full Professor Level in Interpersonal Conflict and Violence. This is one of four positions being sought for the coming year as part of a major expansion of the department (other positions include Social/Health, Industrial/Organizational, and Clinical). Candidates for all positions should demonstrate a record predictive of future scholarly productivity, ability to generate external funding, and capability of contributing to undergraduate and doctoral programs. Candidates with strong quantitative and/or measurement skills with interest in contributing to the Department’s offerings in quantitative methods are especially encouraged to apply. The appointment would begin August 2003. The University of Houston is seeking to further develop its national presence in the area of Interpersonal Conflict and Violence. New faculty will participate in establishing research centers of excellence in collaboration with current faculty. We seek candidates whose area of expertise would contribute to our APA approved Clinical, Social, or Industrial Organizational Psychology programs. Successful candidates will have an established record of programmatic research in interpersonal conflict and violence and/or related areas. Current faculty interests in this initiative are focused on the effects of violence on children, the development of successful interventions for both victim assistance and the prevention of violence, and the psychological and psychophysiological processes responsible for domestic violence. Although the specific areas of interest for new candidates is open, identified areas of interest include the development and evaluation of violence prevention/intervention programs, understanding precursors to violent behavior, the development of innovative methods for assessing violence and its consequences, and the study of minority populations as it relates to violence.

The Department of Psychology is one of 13 departments in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. More than 110 graduate students are enrolled in the APA approved Clinical, Industrial Organizational, or Social Programs. Only 10 minutes away is the world’s largest medical center, the Texas Medical Center (TMC), consisting of 42 institutions that include the University of Texas–Houston Health Sciences Center, Baylor College of Medicine, and the VA Medical Center. We are linked to the TMC though federal grants, research institutes, faculty appointments, student practicum placements and research. Rice University, with whom we have long-term connections, is nearby as well. The Department of Psychology has extensive partnerships with industries, school districts, and mental health groups in the greater Houston area for research, training, and consulting. The Department of Psychology currently occupies approximately 35,000 sq. ft. of research, office, and clinic space, including the Psychological Research and Services Center (PRSC), a departmental facility that houses the majority of on-campus clinical research as well as the Clinical Psychology program’s training clinic ( See: http://www.uh.edu/prsc/ ). Additional information on the University is available at http://www.uh.edu, and on the Department of Psychology at http://www.psychology.uh.edu. Review of candidates for each position will remain open until the position is filled. Interested candidates should send a curriculum vita, representative publications, and three reference letters to Ernest Jouriles, Ph.D., Chair, Interpersonal Conflict and Violence Search Committee, Department of Psychology, University of Houston, Houston, TX 77204-5022, (713-743-8601, ejouriles@uh.edu.).
