University of Richmond

Jepson School of Leadership Studies

Tenure-Track Position

We are seeking applicants with backgrounds in social or organizational psychology, organizational behavior, or a related field whose scholarly interests are focused on leadership in groups. We are particularly interested in applicants who are committed to research and teaching of leadership studies in the context of an undergraduate liberal arts institution. Knowledge in the application of new communication and computer technologies to group processes is desirable. Candidates should have a Ph.D., a record that clearly shows potential for excellence in teaching and scholarship, and the capability of working with an interdisciplinary group of scholars. Current faculty have backgrounds in anthropology, communication, law, history, management, philosophy, political science, public administration and religious studies. The successful candidate will be a committed and effective teacher and scholar, receptive to new ideas, skilled in leading-edge research methods and pedagogy, and interested in building a creative program that integrates their discipline with leadership studies. Although the search committee has a preference for a junior-faculty candidate, we will consider exceptional applications for a mid or senior-level appointment.

The University of Richmond is a private, highly selective university with a rising national and international profile. The institution is consistently ranked one of the nation's top universities by U.S. News & World Report and other college guides. The University is noted for its challenging academic programs, excellent facilities, commitment to undergraduate education, and strong resource base, including an endowment of nearly one billion dollars. An ambitious 10-year strategic plan provides a strong sense of momentum for the future. Richmond has a full-time enrollment of approximately 3,400 in schools of arts and sciences, business, law, and leadership studies. In addition, the University enrolls approximately 1,300 part-time students through a school of continuing studies. Over 90% of the full-time undergraduates live on campus, more than half are involved in internships, 40% participate in study abroad programs, and two-thirds participate in community service. Located two hours south of Washington, D.C., Richmond has a population of one million, and as state capital, is home to numerous financial, cultural and civic organizations. The University's campus, consistently named one of the nation's most beautiful, is located six miles west of downtown and offers an extraordinary quality of life for faculty, staff and students.

Inaugurated in 1992, the Jepson School of Leadership Studies is an independent academic unit of the University and offers students the opportunity to major or minor in leadership studies. The School also plans to offer a new degree program, a Masters in Leadership Studies. With the aim of educating students for and about leadership, the Jepson School offers an intellectually challenging curriculum that is based in the liberal arts and delivered by means of a rigorous and innovative pedagogy. In their courses and related experiences, students are led to appreciate the demands and moral responsibilities of leadership as well as to develop the skills that will help them effect social and organizational change. In addition to the academic program, the school has leader-in-residence programs, speaker forums, and seminars and conferences on leadership issues. Additional information about the Jepson School, including our curriculum and information about the faculty, can be found on our web site: http://www.richmond.edu/jepson.
