The Department of Psychology at Portland State University has an opening for a new tenure-track position for an Applied Social Psychologist in our Applied Social & Community Psychology area beginning September 2017. The department has a strong applied research orientation and has an Applied Psychology Ph.D. program with specializations in Applied Social & Community, Applied Developmental, and Industrial/Organization Psychology.

Qualifications include a doctoral degree in social psychology or a related field. Successful candidate must have an earned Ph.D. by Sept. 15, 2017. We seek candidates who have an established record of applied community-based research and publication, or demonstrated potential for establishing such a record. The candidate should conduct theoretically-based applied social psychological research to address important social issues. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work addresses issues of diversity, equity, and/or social justice, broadly defined, including, but not limited to underrepresented groups such as gender, class, immigrant status, culture, and race.

The successful candidate will have an established research and publication record that is complementary to the area’s focus on Urban Health and Community Well-being, which, defined broadly, encompasses work promoting mental and physical health, as well as healthy social outcomes and remediating negative influences like discrimination. We are especially interested in research that addresses issues relevant to underrepresented and disadvantaged groups, and translates into theory development, intervention, practical solutions, and effective social policy. Particular consideration will also be given to candidates who contribute to our department’s strength in quantitative statistics and advanced applied research methods.

Candidates are expected to have a grant funding track record or potential commensurate with level of experience.

Responsibilities include maintaining a productive program of applied and community-based research; teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in applied social psychology, including courses related to the applicant’s area of expertise, research methodology course(s) and undergraduate core courses; mentoring graduate students, including supervising graduate students’ community-based theses and dissertations; advising undergraduates; and contributing in service to the department, university and profession. We specifically encourage applicants whose research, teaching, outreach, and service will contribute to the department’s strong diversity and social justice focus, while integrating with and complementing existing Department strengths.
