Social Psychology and Cancer Research. The Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Social or Health Psychology to begin as early as July 1, 2016. The primary appointment for this position will be in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience, within the Social Psychology Doctoral Program. This recruitment is part of a major initiative supported by the state legislature to expand cancer research across the entire UNC campus. As such, it is a joint effort of the UNC College of Arts and Sciences and the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, the University’s National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. In addition to the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience’s long history of distinction in social psychology, the Cancer Center brings unparalleled opportunities to this position. It is a leader in behavioral and public health research related to cancer and enjoys unusual support within the state, including direct allocation of state funds to the Cancer Center that can support attractive start-up packages and excellent research resources going forward. Support from the Cancer Center will result in a reduced teaching load. We are interested in psychologists with innovative research that links behavioral science and cancer, including basic research and translational approaches. Successful candidates may specialize in any area of social/health psychology, though we are especially interested in applicants with research programs that complement the program’s existing strengths in either topic or approach. Areas of research interest may include (but are not limited to) work related to risk perception, self-regulation, decision making, social networks, social inequalities, emotion and wellbeing, motivation, psychosocial predictors of health, interventions to promote health behaviors or treatment adherence, or prevent risk-related behavior, and biological and neural bases of social and health behavior. Successful candidates will have a strong commitment to research funding, publication, and teaching, and an affinity for working in a multidisciplinary, collaborative research environment.

The search committee will begin reviewing applications November 1, 2015 and will continue to review new applications until the position is filled. Questions regarding the position may be directed to the chair of the search committee, Dr. Paschal Sheeran (psheeran@unc.edu).
