Professor Nilanjana Dasgupta in the Department of Psychology at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst seeks applications for a 2-year Post-Doctoral Research Associate beginning in July 2014; renewable for 2 more years if excellent performance is demonstrated.
The postdoc will work closely with Dr. Dasgupta on a longitudinal project funded by the National Science Foundation examining the development and change of adolescents’ self-concept and aspirations in math and science in middle school. The study examines how peer influences and gender and racial stereotypes shape adolescents’ self-concept implicitly and explicitly. The ideal candidate will have research expertise in academic achievement, adolescent development or implicit social cognition. Candidates must have experience with longitudinal research designs including data collection and management of large datasets. Data collection will require domestic travel to middle schools for 2-3 weeks in September-October and May-June. Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must have a PhD in psychology, education, sociology, human development, or a related discipline by the time of appointment. Candidates must have excellent statistical skills suitable for longitudinal data analysis including growth curve modeling, hierarchical linear modeling, or structural equation modeling. Also required are strong scientific writing skills and the ability to write theory-driven scientific papers quickly and independently.
This is an ideal position for a new PhD looking to spend most of their time strengthening their research portfolio and publishing peer-reviewed articles with close mentoring from the PI. The postdoc will have many opportunities to practice other skills such as presenting and networking at national conferences in order to prepare for an independent career. Travel to one conference per year will be paid by the grant. In addition to helping initiate the NSF-funded project mentioned above, collecting and analyzing data, and publishing papers from this project, the successful candidate will also have the opportunity to work with two other datasets, already collected, that are ready to be analyzed and written up. All datasets focus on identifying social psychological factors that protect and enhance adolescents’ and young adults’ achievement self-concept in science and math despite negative race and gender stereotypes.
