 Research Fellow
Institution/Organization: University of Birmingham
Job Location: United Kingdom
Job Types: Postdoctoral, Tenure-Track
Contact Person: Kathleen Armour
Date Posted: October 16th, 2013
Web Site: http://www.jobs.ac.uk/job/AHL049/birmingham-fellow...

At the start of your Birmingham Fellowship, the emphasis will be on consolidating an outstanding research trajectory and the primary focus will be on research throughout. However, because the University is committed to excellence in Education, you will be expected to contribute to PhD supervision and to develop a growing teaching portfolio over the course of your fellowship term. Normally, your teaching portfolio will increase year-on-year until it reaches 100% of a normal portfolio by the fifth year of your fellowship. As a Birmingham Fellow, you will not be expected to contribute substantially to academic management and administration during the term of your fellowship, although you will be expected to engage as part of the academic community.

Research will involve initiating, conducting and disseminating high-quality original research. You will be expected to maintain a research profile that can be judged as of international level or world-leading. You will be expected actively to seek external research funding, as appropriate in your discipline, and to develop during your fellowship into a credible and successful principal investigator and research leader within the University and within your discipline. You will actively recruit and develop doctoral researchers. You will also be expected to engage with industry, policymakers, the media or others to facilitate the wider impact of your research, as appropriate within their field or discipline.

Teaching will include supervising and examining PhD students. It is likely to include development and delivery of teaching at the undergraduate, postgraduate and/or CPD level, including associated tasks such as marking and advising. It will typically also involve developing and advising others, including providing expert advice to staff and students.

Applications are welcome from candidates from the UK and abroad. Candidates must have been awarded a PhD (or equivalent terminal degree) by 23 November 2013. Candidates should be on a trajectory to become principal investigators and research leaders. Their publication record must be such that there is already clear evidence of outputs that are at least internationally excellent, if not world-leading, in terms of originality, significance and rigour.
