Social or Clinical Psychology and Cancer Research. The Department of Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for one to two tenured or tenure-track positions (open rank) in clinical and/or social psychology to begin as early as July 1, 2012. This recruitment is part of a major initiative supported by the state legislature to expand cancer research throughout the UNC campus. As such, it is a joint effort of the UNC College of Arts and Sciences and the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, the University's National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.

In addition to the Department of Psychology's long history of distinction within social and clinical psychology, the Cancer Center brings unparalleled opportunities to these positions. It is a leader in behavioral and public health research related to cancer and enjoys unusual support within the state, including direct allocation of state funds to the Cancer Center that can support attractive start-up packages and excellent research resources going forward. The primary appointment for each position will be in the Department of Psychology, within the Social Psychology or Clinical Psychology Doctoral Programs, depending on the applicant's background. Support from the Cancer Center will result in a reduced teaching load.

We are interested in social, clinical, or health psychologists with innovative research that links behavioral science and cancer, whether applied, translational, or more theoretically-driven. Applicants' areas of research may range widely within cancer prevention or survivorship, with emphases in either clinical or social psychology, such as work related to risk perception, decision making, social networks, social inequalities, stereotypes, wellbeing, implicit motives, concomitant psychological symptoms, psychosocial predictors of health or treatment adherence, or the prevention of risk-related behavior. Successful candidates will have a strong commitment to research funding, publication, and teaching, and an affinity for working in a multidisciplinary, collaborative research environment.

To apply, use the electronic submission website at website at:

Click on "Open Positions' and submit the following materials electronically: cover letter; curriculum vitae; research and teaching statements; teaching evaluations if applicable; and up to five (p)reprints. The search committee will begin considering applications on November 1, 2011, and continue until the Department fills up to two positions. For further information, contact Dr. Barbara L. Fredrickson (blf@unc.edu). We strongly encourage women and minorities to apply. The University of North Carolina is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
