A 2-year NIDA-funded post-doctoral position is currently available in Dr. Matthew Shane's Clinical Affective Neuroscience laboratory (CANlab) at The Mind Research Network in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Dr. Shane's CANlab utilizes primarily MRI and EEG to examine the neurocognitive and neuroaffective abnormalities underlying psychopathology, including substance abuse, antisociality, mood disorders and psychopathy. Current projects in the lab are focused on the integrity of error-monitoring, empathic processing, and the regulation of cognitive/affective processes within these disorders, with several new projects making use of real-time fMRI to evaluate the efficacy of neuro-feedback approaches as a treatment aid for substance abuse and psychopathy. The majority of this work is conducted on a research-dedicated mobile MRI system deployed to various correctional facilities across the country, providing unparalleled access to otherwise difficult to reach populations. Studies within healthy populations often parallel these clinical projects, which help inform our clinical work, while affording concurrent investigation of basic structural/functional processes. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to these projects as part of his/her post-doctoral work, but will also have the opportunity to pursue his/her own projects, particularly in the 2nd year of the position.
Applicants should have obtained their PHD in psychology, psychiatry, neuroscience or a related field by the position's start date, and should have considerable experience with either MRI or EEG data collection and analysis. Specific experience with SPM or EEGlab would be viewed particularly favorably. Clinical training, or specific experience working with disordered populations is not required, but would definitely be welcome. Most importantly, applicants must be able to demonstrate exceptional analytic and written skills, and be able to show evidence of previous publishing success. Post-doctoral fellows at MRN are used to experiencing success in obtaining external support for their projects, and the successful applicant would be expected to apply for such support.
