The University of Utah invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Science. The Dean will serve in the College’s key leadership role for a five-year renewable term, commencing July 1, 2009. The College comprises seven academic departments: Anthropology, Economics, Family and Consumer Studies, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology. The College seeks a Dean with a record of distinction as a scholar and administrator suitable for a tenured position at the rank of Professor in one of these departments. The Dean will lead a diverse and collegial faculty that includes internationally prominent researchers, outstanding scholars and a dedicated and professional staff.

Candidates must have an excellent record of social and/or behavioral science research and scholarship, a commitment to faculty support and development as well as a commitment to strong and innovative educational programs. A successful candidate must possess strong administrative skills, experience in promoting extramurally-funded research, a significant commitment to fundraising, dedication to public service and the enthusiasm, energy and vision to lead the College forward as a nationally and internationally recognized institution.

The College awards over 1500 undergraduate and graduate degrees each year from its seven academic departments and related interdisciplinary programs (Behavioral Science and Health; Gender Studies; Environmental Studies; Social Science Composite Teaching). The College supports several outstanding research centers, forums, and institutes, including the Barbara L. and Norman C. Tanner Center for Nonviolent Human Rights Advocacy, the Hinckley Institute of Politics, the Rocco C. and Marion S. Siciliano Forum: Considerations on the Status of American Society, the Utah Criminal Justice Center, the Institute for Public and International Affairs, the Archeological Center, and dedicated programs in Dubai, China, and Thailand. The College also has institutional collaborations in research and instruction with a wide range of departments and colleges in the University, including medicine, nursing, pharmacy, science, humanities, business, and law.

The University of Utah is the state’s flagship institution of higher education with an enrollment of approximately 22,000 undergraduate and 6,000 graduate students, and is one of fifty-nine public universities classified as a Research I institution. Salt Lake City is a progressive state capital and sits at the center of a growing and increasingly diverse metropolitan area of over one million people. Outside Magazine recently listed Salt Lake City among its “New American Dream Towns,” describing it as “a near-perfect location for avid outdoor adventurers.” Salt Lake is also home to the Utah Symphony and Opera, the Utah Ballet, several professional sports teams, and a wide range of other cultural and recreational activities, including the annual Sundance Film Festival.

Applications (brief letter of interest and CV) and nominations should be sent to search@csbs.utah.edu. Questions regarding the position can be directed to the search committee co-chair, Timothy W. Smith, PhD, via telephone at (801) 581-5087 or e-mail at tim.smith@psych.utah.edu. The search committee will begin review of applications on January 16, 2008, and will continue to receive applications until the position is filled.

The University of Utah is an Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action Employer, encourages nominations and applications from women and minorities, and provides reasonable accommodation to the known disabilities of applicants and employees. The University of Utah values candidates who have experience working in settings with students from diverse backgrounds, and possess a strong commitment to improving access to higher education for historically underrepresented students.
