 Research Scientist
Institution/Organization: Addiction Research Institute
Job Location: Vermont, U.S.A.
Contact Person: M.W. Perrine, Ph.D.
Date Posted: September 8th, 2000

The Addiction Research Institute seeks a social/behavioral scientist (any level) with interests in drug and alcohol studies. The position is based in Vermont and provides an excellent opportunity to play a major role, from the beginning, in a long-term, large-scale, multi-phase, cross-disciplinary research project called “ground-breaking” and “landmark” by NIH reviewers. The project focuses on drugs, alcohol, and driving. It is designed to assess the prevalence and crash risk of 80 illicit and pharmaceutical drugs – with and without alcohol presence – in both crash-injured and general population drivers. Data collection will be conducted in California; all other project work will be conducted in Vermont and Australia.

Responsibilities include: contributing to research design and procedures, supervising research assistants and data collection, data management, statistical analysis and interpretation, preparing manuscripts for publication, and contributing to and/or initiating proposals for further research.

Qualifications include: Ph.D. in social/behavioral sciences, strong analytic and computer skills, ability to work as part of an international team, and excellent writing ability. Background and experience in survey, field, or experimental research in drugs, alcohol, traffic safety, health behavior, or some combination thereof, preferred.

Founded in 1988, the Addiction Research Institute/Vermont Alcohol Research Center is a private, not-for-profit organization. It has been the recipient of nine grants from the National Institutes of Health and currently receives the majority of its funding from NIAAA and NIDA. Drugs of addiction and impairment (licit and illicit) are the common element in all current and submitted research projects. These projects fall into one or more of the following types: field studies, surveys, or experimental studies.

The Addiction Research Institute is located in greater Burlington, Vermont, in a wooded, campus-like setting on Water Tower Hill overlooking Lake Champlain and Mount Mansfield. We enjoy superb support services in a collegial, congenial, and research-centered atmosphere. The Addiction Research Institute offers the successful candidate an exceptional working environment, including a large private office with conference area, state-of-the-art computer equipment and research tools, an on-site library, and easy commuter access.

Please send a letter stating your interest and outlining your relevant experience, a curriculum vitae, and examples of written work to:
