Purdue University seeks nominations and applications for Dean, College of Health and Human Sciences. The College of Health and Human Sciences (HHS) at Purdue University brings together scholars in the health sciences and human sciences to strategically address issues vital to enhancing people’s health and quality of life. HHS’ multidisciplinary learning environment uniquely prepares students to contribute to improved human health and behavior and to serve as leaders in their disciplines. The College also provides a rich environment for world-changing research and discovery. Purdue’s land-grant mission facilitates the translation of these discoveries from theory to application, benefiting not only those in Indiana but society as a whole.

Established in 1869, Purdue is Indiana’s land-grant university, a comprehensive educational and research institution that is a member of the American Association of Universities (AAU). Purdue ranks fifth among public institutions in the United States. The West Lafayette Campus, located one hour north of Indianapolis and two hours south of downtown Chicago, has ten academic colleges with an enrollment of 40,000 students. Purdue’s strengths in Engineering, Agriculture, Science, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Liberal Arts, Management, and the Health and Human Sciences contribute to a robust research and educational environment.

The College of Health and Human Sciences includes the following academic units: Consumer Science; Health and Kinesiology; Health Sciences; Hospitality and Tourism Management; Human Development and Family Studies; Nursing; Nutrition Science; Psychological Sciences; Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences. In addition, the Public Health Graduate Program, which is administered at the college level, involves collaboration among all HHS academic units. Health and Human Sciences Extension delivers educational programs, applied research and resources to all 92 Indiana counties, with a focus on issues related to food, family, money and health. The College of Health and Human Sciences has approximately 240 faculty, 490 staff, 3,900 undergraduate students, 500 graduate students, and 54,500 living alumni.

As chief academic and administrative officer of the College, the Dean’s primary role is to provide exceptional scientific vision and leadership and to foster a culture of academic excellence and inclusiveness. The Dean actively represents the College to a variety of constituencies internal and external to the University. Reporting directly to the Provost, the Dean joins with the College’s department heads, faculty, other deans to assure that learning and research activities of the highest levels of excellence flourish. Fund raising to support the many programs, faculty, and facility needs of the College is an important responsibility of the Dean.

The successful candidate for the position of Dean College of Health and Human Sciences will possess the ability to speak the language of different disciplines, integrate across fields to synergize research, engage multiple communities, and stimulate learning to capitalize on the diversity of the college. The Dean will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching.

Essential Qualifications:

• have a preeminent scientific record appropriate for a tenured full professorship with demonstrated excellence commensurate with the caliber of scholars the College expects to attract to Purdue;
• be an excellent administrator with a proven record of providing scientific vision and leadership and the ability to set priorities, allocate resources, and achieve specific goals;
• be an exceptional communicator;
• have a deep commitment to undergraduate and graduate education;
• be an effective fundraiser who can secure flexible support for the College;
• have substantial experience with the national research funding environment;
• be able to connect with all the constituencies served by the University and be able to articulate and advocate for the goals of the College;
• have an effective voice for and demonstrated commitment to cultural and ethnic diversity and gender equality.
