 Greater Good Research/Writing Fellow
Institution/Organization: Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley
Job Location: California, U.S.A.
Job Types: Postdoctoral, Other
Contact Person: Jason Marsh
Date Posted: February 3rd, 2017

The Greater Good Science Center (GGSC) at UC Berkeley studies the psychology, sociology, and neuroscience of well-being and teaches skills to foster a thriving, resilient, and compassionate society. For more than 10 years, it has not only sponsored cutting-edge research but translated that research into practical and inspiring stories, tools, and tips.

This one-year position will help the GGSC track recent scientific findings within some of the GGSC’s core areas of interest, including the science of generosity and gratitude. He or she will conduct comprehensive literature reviews on three separate scientific topics, such as the science of generosity; identify salient trends from the research on those topics; and write about key insights and trends from that research. The position is funded by the John Templeton Foundation (JTF), and so will place particular emphasis on research JTF has funded over the past two decades and its significance within the broader field of scholarship.

For each of the three topics that the position reviews, the written work will include an extensive, detailed report (white paper) reviewing the main findings and conclusions from this research, as well as shorter articles geared toward a popular audience, intended for publication on the GGSC’s online magazine, Greater Good, which has more than 500,000 monthly readers. Both forms of writing will be geared toward non-academic audiences, for broad public consumption. Depending on the candidate’s background, skills, and interests, and if circumstances permit, there may also be opportunities to: a) write up these findings in 1-2 articles suitable for publication in peer-reviewed, scholarly journals, and b) participate in research conducted in the UC Berkeley psychology department.

This is a full-time (100% time), one-year contract position, with the possibility of extending beyond one year if funding permits.

RESPONSIBILITIES

-- Conducts a review of the scientific literature on three separate topics, with each review zeroing in on key studies published over the past two decades on topics such as generosity and gratitude; the reviews will span disciplines, with a particular focus on social and developmental psychology, as well as sociology, behavioral economics, and the cognitive sciences.

-- Identifies important trends in that science, synthesizing lines of research from various disciplines.

-- Writes about the key insights and trends from this body of research, producing a detailed (~35-page) report and a series of short articles geared toward popular (non-academic) audiences, for publication on the GGSC’s online magazine, Greater Good.

-- Presents some of the findings from this research in public forums, including conferences hosted by foundations and academic institutions.

-- Depending on the candidate’s background and interests, there may be opportunities to collaborate on research conducted in the UC Berkeley psychology department, at up to 20% of the candidate’s time in the position.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

-- Expertise in social or developmental psychology, or related area, with a particular focus on the science of “prosocial” behavior and emotions.

-- Experience undertaking comprehensive literature reviews on scientific topics.

-- Strong skills in analyzing and synthesizing large amounts of information, particularly the ability to identify and articulate important trends across a large body of scholarship.

-- Strong writing skills, particularly for making scientific findings understandable to non-academic audiences.

-- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff; both verbally and in writing.

-- Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

-- Deep knowledge of research on “prosocial” behavior and emotions, from disciplines including psychology, neuroscience, sociology, and others.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

-- Advanced degree in social or developmental psychology, or related area, strongly preferred; doctorate preferred, though Master’s degree or commensurate knowledge/experience may be acceptable.
